Alternative Sessions At Hollingwells Equestrian Centre

At Hollingwells we are excited to be able to offer two types of alternative sessions incorporating our horses and ponies.

Alternative therapies provide different ways of supporting emotional, social, physical, and personal development by using engaging, hands-on experiences rather than traditional talk-based approaches. For many people these approaches can help build confidence improve well-being, develop new skills and create meaningful connections in a calm and supportive environment.

Both equine assisted learning and therapeutic horsemanship recognise the remarkable ability of horses to encourage trust, confidence, resilience, and personal development. While each approach has a different focus, both offer positive, person-centred experiences that can complement other forms of support and help individuals thrive.

Therapeutic Horsemanship is available on either a one-to-one or small group basis (typically up to six participants, with customized courses available upon request).

During these sessions, participants learn about horse care and behaviour in a positive, non-judgmental, and safe environment. These equine activities are designed to build self-confidence and self-esteem while helping young people develop communication skills, teamwork, responsibility, empathy, and resilience.

Ideal for young individuals aged 14-25 preparing for their future and acquiring skills for employment, small group equine care sessions provide valuable life skills and teamwork experience in a friendly, safe setting.

Activities include feeding animals, cleaning stables, field maintenance, pony walks, and fun!

The involvement of animals in therapy has historical roots stretching back thousands of years.

While various animals are recognized for their therapeutic benefits, horses are particularly noted for their ability to inspire change.

Their capacity to read human emotions and their inherent honesty make them an effective tool in psychological therapy. Equine therapy not only promotes emotional growth but also facilitates personal development.

Participants in equine-assisted programs often experience transformative benefits, as working with horses can be a complementary aspect of a broader treatment plan.

Horses are exceptionally gentle and understanding, making them effective at soothing and relaxing individuals, enhancing mood, and reducing stress.

Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) offers an innovative approach to mental health and education.

By observing and understanding horse behaviour, EAL utilises specially trained Equine Facilitators and engaging activities with horses to support vulnerable individuals in reflecting on their anxieties and behaviours.

This process fosters greater resilience, enhanced social skills, and emotional development. Importantly, no riding is involved, and the horses are carefully selected to ensure they are safe to handle and interact with.

Equine Facilitated Therapy Activity Mornings may support mental health recovery, encourage positive mental health and resilience, and contribute to overall health and wellness.

Why Horses?

Because of Their Size: Their large and powerful presence can initially seem intimidating, presenting a challenge that, when overcome, can significantly boost confidence and self-esteem. Gaining the trust of such animals reinforces feelings of empowerment.

Because They Are Herd Animals: Horses naturally seek companionship and wish to be led, fostering social bonds that can be especially meaningful with humans. They are inclined to form relationships with people when the individual is ready.

Because They Mirror Behaviour: Horses possess a remarkable ability to reflect the thoughts and behaviours of those around them. As prey animals, they are adept at reading body language and responding accordingly. Approaching with a negative attitude may lead to disengagement, while entering with calmness and confidence often elicits a positive response, encouraging self-reflection and behavioural insights.

Because They Have Their Own Personality: Horses exhibit human-like traits, sometimes appearing stubborn or playful, and can express care and nurturing when someone is upset. These characteristics enhance their role as companions in the therapeutic journey, providing ample opportunities for personal growth.
